Ariana Grande - Positions
We keep it poppin
Trying to broaden my horizons on the albums I review, and I have heard things fron Ariana that I do enjoy. I've also heard quite the opposite. The one consistent thing throughout though is her pure ability to sing, even though I feel at times she does over do the runs. So take a listen into her latest album, positions. And here, we go
shut up
Don't tell me to shut up! Starts out with a nice orchestrated backing track. She shows a great flow in the verse that I think actually would have benefited with a beat, but the music still works. The chorus works as well, but the runs I mentioned in the intro come in already. I think it would have been better if it was toned down just a bit. But otherwise its a nice opening track
34+35
Bouncy Bubble Gum pop. I have well documented in the past I'm a fan of it, but there is a limit to what I like with it. This one gets a little close for my liking. I used to see her on my sisters little tv shows and its a little weird hearing her sing these words, but she a big girl now. Really though this song lacks some structure, it has good elements but overall, eh
motive
This is better, I like the melody in the verse and the chorus. No parts are overdone and it has a good beat to it. This song has an older feel to it that I'm a fan of. And I like Doja in small doses and her contribution fits in well to this song. Yes, I have a playlist dedicated to pop on my Spotify and this song is going on there
just like magic
That slow beat is pretty damn nice I must say. Between it and Ariana's vocals match the magic aesthetic. (side note as I'm listening to this and writing she said aesthetic right when I wrote it, neat) Her singing in the bridge is pretty excellent. She just straight up sings it and it works
off the table
Is this an Art of Noise song?! I like this, super vibey and chill. And the Weekend just slides in so flawlessly. This song is actually really really good. Going beyond just your pop music fans, good music is good music and this transcends that, as I'd say its pretty great. Anyone who is a fan of music should like this song
six thirty
The verse is ok for the most part, but I don't really enjoy the chorus all to much. It lacks the density I think it was building too, and lyrically is just bleh. I know I'm not exactly the target demo and those are those that will enjoy the simpleness aka teenage girls but that don't change the fact that this song is not the best
safety net
Back on track here, with a solid structure, solid melody, and a catchy as hell chorus. There really isn't much more to it than that. There's nothing here sonically offensive, its an easy listen
my hair
She really sings about her hair a lot doesn't she? We get the first audible guitar and I feel more at home with it. It gives this song a very Jazzy feel and it makes it pretty cool. If she hasn't already, I think Ariana could pull off a pretty solid Jazz album. Also that bridge is somewhat hypnotizing and reminds me of Mariah Carey
nasty
This song is well, nasty, and generic. I don't have anything else to say
west side
another plug and play song. Hopefully she mixes it back up coming
love language
That is a fun little carnival sounding back track. The vocal melody carries on the fun. One thing I really noticed is, she says shit, like, a lot. I'm not sure if its her trying to sound more adult, matching the aging of her original fans, but it doesn't make you sound more mature, it makes you sound like a kid in elementary who got away with swearing for the first time
positions
Title Track time. And its easy to see why as this is the most lead single sounding track of the song. There's nothing original here as it sounds like every other generic radio pop song you hear these days. Yes, I said I enjoy pop, but that's really the older stuff and select modern pop that stands out on its own from the crowd. This, doesn't. It goes along with the majority of this album that I'll get into in just a bit
obvious
obviously, its more generic stuff. Is it also a little more obvious that I'm starting to get annoyed.
pov
Ok, we are closing it out on a positive. This song sounds much more soulful. At first I thought the lyrics were the self centered lyrics that she has been very guilty of in the past, but when you pay attention its really about trying to love yourself as much as somewhen else does. That's something that most strive for
If any Ariana fans made it this far, have fun attacking me for the rest of this review. Save for a few spots, I did not enjoy this. The vast majority of it sounds very phoned in, and its for the most part very very monotone. Practically none of the songs are long enough to build any sort of identity, save for again the loan bright spots. There really isn't any track that truly shows her vocal abilities and that's a little surprising because I know what she is capable of. To say this disappointed me, is well an understatement. I'm fully prepared for the hate I can get for even doing this review, but frankly I don't care, because if someone asked me to listen to this again, all I'd be able to think is, ah, crap baskets. It's boring to single yourself in on one genre, if you do trust me it feels good to hear something new, but this unfortunately isn't the album I feel to do that with. Take Care
